Reception: 15 May 2010, 7-9p
MAIN SPACE | Synergies: an exhibition of selected works by five emerging
artists from Kingston features
Erin Milliken, Catherine Toews, Kaethe Yanovsky, Anna Elmberg Wright and
Jenny Brown and is curated
by Jocelyn Purdie, Director. Synergies brings together the local
emerging artists who participated in the
inaugural "Art Shift" program for local artists. In the exhibit, insects
and skeletal remains emerge from the disposable and ephemeral remnants
of our culture while portraits of outlandishly adorned women speak to
social anxiety and uncertainty. These are a sampling of the works in
Synergies, where sculpture,
drawings, paintings and video animation converge in a mosaic of works
that capture the essence of
Kingston's art scene.
PROJECT ROOM | Concurrent with this exhibition, in the project room, we
present Vacillation Viewer,
a video-sculpture installation work by Christine Dewancker. Old
technologies and new come together
in this participatory sculpture that is modeled on coin-operated viewers
that still dot the shorelines of our waterways and hillsides. The
hand-cranked machine, constructed of found materials and digitally
produced zoetrope animation bring together photographs of Kingston's
waterfront that morph into
abstraction in an exploration of humanity's relationship with nature and
the environment.
