Book of Spells at The Wellington Street Theatre - June 12th

May 27th, 2010 Kingston, Ontario...2WP (Two Women Productions) is delighted to announce that Book of Spells will be playing a return engagement in Kingston at The Wellington Street Theatre on Saturday, June 12th at 8 pm.

This unique performance explores what happens when two women, well into their middle years cast caution to the wind and begin sharing a life together, And...it’s not just “happily ever after”! Their whole history of other times and places is waiting to devour them and each one comes with more baggage than they need.

Nevertheless, this is indeed a love story-raw and honest-woven around two stories from the Book of Spells, stories of magic realism by British writers Sara Maitland. One is a tale of the witch in Hansel and Gretel still living after all these years within the forest; the other tells of a young mother taught to fly by two old women, so long ago.

“Its a huge leap” says Jennifer Cayley. “What we're trying to do is to make a very particular contribution to the contemporary storytelling revival by bringing good adult storytelling to communities in Eastern Ontario.”

'Jan Andrews and Jennifer Cayley recall their astonishment in early days, to think they might be lesbians. Both were married, one unhappily, one in a perfect marriage. Their penchant for discussing books-Doris Lessing, Timothy Findlay, Jane Rule and more are mentioned,-over dinners out, had led to passionate discussions, loud enough to still other diner's conversations...and eventually to love and a period of what sounds like bone-chilling hate and love again. Understated abandon, intelligent love, Always the best romance tales' from a review by James Reaney of The London Free Press.

With other story-telling work, Jan has travelled to festivals and concerts across Canada, in The United Kingdom, Australia and the U.S.. Jennifer has appeared nationwide and also in Hawaii. Both have told stories from such great epics as The Iliad and The Odyssey. Both love the dark mysteries of the folk tales. Both have been involved as presenters and administrators, ensuring that other storytellers have opportunities to develop their work. Jan is also the writer of books for young people. Her work has been short listed for a number of major awards, including the Governor General's Literary Award
