Concert - Howard Alexander - Brockville, June 14th

Tuesday, June 01, 2010

Brockville Performing Arts Hall of Fame Award Winner, Howard Alexander, gives back.

Composer and conductor Howard Alexander presents a “Retrospective Concert” with over 70 of Brockville’s finest award winning musicians. The talented individuals and ensembles are gathering to celebrate and perform an exciting evening of Alexander’s compositions. It all takes place on Monday, June 14 at 7pm at Wall St. United Church.

The beneficiaries of the proceeds from the concert are the students in the St. Lawrence College Music Theatre Performance Program.

“Many people supported me when I was starting out”, says Alexander. “I believe in the Performance Program and want to see these budding professional artists reach their goals.”

The “Retrospective Concert” features fellow inductees Anne Landon, Lance Besharah, Deborah Dunleavy, Judy Quick, Chris Coyea, plus Catherine Oxenford-Grant, Donna Richards, Bruce Alexander, The Brockville Concert Band, Alexander’s Big Time Band and many of Brockville’s talented singers and musicians.

Howard Alexander has been writing music since his high school days at BCI.  In 2002 he completed the score for the opera, “The Last Wife” which was performed in recital at the Brockville Arts Centre.

The “Retrospective Concert” consists of 20 selected pieces from his thirty years of composing. Small ensemble music for woodwinds, choir pieces, an organ work, two selections from the opera “The Last Wife”, band pieces written specifically for the Brockville Concert Band, and jazz band pieces performed by Alexander’s Big Time Band round out the program.

“Selecting music for the program has been a question of what to leave out”, Alexander notes.

“Most of the works on the program have been written for friends and students to play”, states Alexander. “Two pieces are going to be performed for the first time – a men’s choir piece and a commissioned work for the Brockville Concert Band.

Admission to this once in a lifetime concert is a free will donation. Funds raised will go to the Faculty Bursary Fund for students enrolled in the St. Lawrence College Music Theatre program.
