Call for Proposals: CFKA Spring 2011 Community Grants

The Community Foundation for Kingston & Area is now accepting Letters of Intent for innovative projects that strengthen and enhance the quality of life within our community.

We welcome applications in the areas Arts and Culture, Community Development, Education and Literacy, Environment, Health and Social Services, Heritage Preservation, Recreation, Youth.

To be considered, please submit four copies of a Letter of Intent by

4:30 pm on Thursday, February 10, 2011.

All Letters of Intent are reviewed by an independent committee, and a limited number of applicants will be invited to submit a full Grant Application, due March 24, 2011.

Hey there folks,

Yes, the Fat Goose Craft Fair, our favourite holiday season craft sale, is back (and boozy). It's an evening event this time 'round, and we're hosting it at a spiffy new venue where you can quaff egg nog and lounge by a fireplace. Super-interested? Read on!

So you know, Fat Goose is being brought to you by a crack team of crafters: Annie Clifford, Lucas Huang, Vincent Perez and Meredith Powell. Also, and as always, it's happily part of the Apple Crisp Arts continent. We thought it might be fun to sell the things we make alongside the charming things you make, and do it in a way that we all earn a million dollars and there's something nice to drink, too.

In an effort to help you make as much money as possible and to encourage beginning craftspeople to join in, we're trying to keep the cost of tables low. One of the ways we're trying is by working as volunteers. Another is to have everyone who sells at Fat Goose take on one or two little jobs, like putting up posters, stuffing flyers into mailboxes, or coming early to set up tables. We figure an hour of everybody's time will go a long way, and it means we can spend the bulk of our budget on advertising, which will bring unprecedented crowds to our fair, we're sure. And once at the fair, we hope to keep 'em around with a DJ, a bar, a spread, and our usual Fat Goose antics.

Rules, Regulations and Rhubarbs

1. Be nice.

2. We only want things that are made by you... please don't plan on bringing anything made by other folks, even if it's your mom and you want to do her a favour, or things that are made in China — unless you made them while you were there.

3. We reserve the right to ask you to remove crafts from your table if they aren't similar in kind or quality to the photos you submitted or if we have reason to suspect that they weren't made by you, i.e. they're stamped Acme Co. on the bottom.

4. If you'd like to share a full table with someone else, and you will be selling only the things you've made together, that's grand. Otherwise, each of you should apply for one of our half tables.

5. We may have lots of, say, macrame weavers apply. If that's the case, even though we all love hanging plant holders, we'll only be able to accept a few of the finest macrame weavers in order to offer our shoppers the widest variety possible... so don't be mad. See rhubarb #1.

6. We reserve the right to accept or refuse anyone based on our sensibilities and our sensibilities alone. But some of the things we're excited about include: locally made work, unique and original ideas, high quality of product, and depth of process (that is, someone who makes it all from scratch). And we're gonna hold a spot or two for folks who are just beginning to make and sell things, so if you see stuff that you think isn't up to snuff, be generous and kind to the newbies. Again, see rhubarb #1.

7. Please arrive no earlier than 5 pm to set up. Please set up only in your spot and don't take up more room than you've asked for. Also, please don't begin taking your things down earlier than 11 pm... even if you're tired and mostly sold out, it's not fair to the other folks who are trying to make a buck.

Creative Arts will be going on a field trip to the Toronto International Art Fair on Friday, October 29, 2010. Due to the many cancellations from students, we are now left with 14 seats left on the bus. We will be leaving at 8 am from QECVI and returning at 9:30 pm. We should arrive in Toronto at around 11 and will spend 3 hours at the TIA fair. After this, there will be 3 hours free time in downtown Toronto. The cost for the trip is $44.00. If you have anyone interested please have them CALL THE CREATIVE ARTS CELLPHONE AT (613)-540-4134.

Two events pay tribute to legendary Norman McLaren

Norman (A Tribute to Norman McLaren): a groundbreaking multi-media tribute to the Andy Warhol of Canadian animation

One of Canada's pioneers of the film industry, this groundbreaking dance / theatre piece recounts the life and work of Norman McLaren. This critically acclaimed piece was the highlight of the Magnetic North Theatre Festival in May and 4D art will make a stop on its Canadian tour to present Norman (A Tribute to Norman McLaren) on Wednesday, October 27 at 7:30pm.

More than a mere retrospective, Norman gives audiences the opportunity to share 4D art's Peter Trosztmer's passion for the dance and movement that runs through the imaginary worlds of McLaren's films. Trosztmer goes to the offices of the National Film Board of Canada, where McLaren worked for most of his life, in order to get a better understanding of the motivation that drove this creative genius. He literally enters the films to dance, exchange, and interact with them. Trosztmer 's discoveries help us learn about the main themes of McLaren's life and work.

The incredible technology used in Norman is one created by 4D art. One of the signatures of their performances, their innovative use of virtual projection blends theatre, dance, film, music and spoken word together seamlessly.

Trotszmer screens interviews made with people who knew McLaren and his work; these holographs materialize out of thin air and appear onstage to guide Peter in his exploration, sharing their knowledge and feelings about the filmmaker. McLaren once said that if he hadn't been a filmmaker, he would have been a choreographer; this show uses movement (of light, of images, of the body) as a way to access his creative world. From Blinkity Blank (Palme d'Or in 1955) to Pas de deux (1968), from Begone Dull Care (1949) to Neighbours (Academy Award in 1952), this production will delight experts and neophytes alike.

In conjunction with this performance, the Grand Theatre is hosting Long Live McLaren, a co-presentation with Queen's University and Reelout Arts Project Inc. Blaine Allan, Associate Professor in the Film and Media department at Queen's University, will share the life and work of this cinematic genius with "An Introduction to Norman McLaren" on Wednesday, October 13, 7pm at the Baby Grand. Allan has taught and written extensively on Canadian film and television and will be discussing the cinematic genius of McLaren.

The evening continues with the Reelout Arts Project Inc. presentation of Long Live McLaren: Contemporary Canadian Queer Animation, a short film collection dedicated to the legacy of animation pioneer Norman McLaren. Featuring GLBTQ-identified artists, including emerging independents andindustry-established filmmakers, Long Live McLaren further proves why Canada maintains a long history of innovation within the animation world. Using a wide range of techniques, the artists draw on the whimsy, humour, intelligence, and heart of McLaren's beloved works to produce fresh and exciting films for a contemporary world. This event is free.

2010 Polaris Music Prize Nominee Dan Mangan is coming to Kingston

Hot on the heels of the August 10th U.S. release date of his Polaris Music Prize nominated album Nice, Nice, Very Nice, and almost a year to the day the album came out north of border, the 2009 Verge XM Artist Of The Year and three time 2010 Western Canadian Music Award nominee announces Canadian fall tour dates. From churches to halls to theatres, the "Peculiar Travel Suggestions" tour will see Dan and his band perform at some of the most beautiful and awe inspiring music venues this country has to offer. Supporting Dan on the eastern leg of the tour will be Harbourcoats, the new solo project from Constantines frontman Bry Webb while the western dates will see

Ontario's The Burning Hell open for the band.

Of course Dan shows no signs of slowing down after that with Australian dates on the horizon for December and January.

Kingston Culture Plan Approved By City Council

Kingston Culture Plan Approved By City Council

I wanted to take this is opportunity to pass along word that the Kingston Culture Plan was approved by Kingston City Council on Tuesday, September 21 by unanimous vote. This is a very exciting moment as this show of support will help to strengthen and grow culture in Kingston as we begin the process of implementing the many diverse recommendations contained within the plan.

We are very pleased that Kingston's first ever Culture Plan has been recognized by City Council as a priority for the City. This is a transformative plan for the community and the region that will position Kingston in the 21st century creative economy. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have been involved in this process who provided their insights and ambitions in support of culture in Kingston.

We would also like to thank the team from the Canadian Urban Institute as well as all the consultants who were involved in this process for facilitating such a wide range of consultations both inside City Hall and within the community. As a result of the numerous meetings, workshops and discussions that were held between September 2009 and May 2010 we were able to work together to identify a shared set of needs, aspirations and values to shape the cultural development of the Kingston community over the next 10 years.

As we begin the work to implement the Kingston Culture Plan we also look forward to the new role that the Cultural Services department will play. As described in the KCP, it will be necessary for Cultural Services to function as a municipal cultural development agency that organizes the resources, knowledge and experience within the community to support cultural vitality throughout the city as a whole. Moving forward, I share the sentiments of Colin Wiginton, Manager, Cultural Services, who has stated that the Kingston Culture Plan presents a very exciting opportunity to build on the strengths that already exist in this city and to share our stories and our creativity with each other and with the world.

The Kingston Culture Plan as approved by City Council is now available on line at www.cityofkingston.ca/culturalpolicyplan. My name is Claire Grady-Smith, and I am spreading the word about a
figurative painting course I'll be teaching this fall at the Kingston
School of Art. This adult course is intended for anyone who wishes to
engage with a community of emerging artists who support and provide
encouraging criticism of each others' hard work.

Course structure will be consensus-based with myself as an experienced
guide, rather than didactic ruler. We will discuss, for example, the
possibility of hiring a model for a session or two, but for the most
part we will be painting memories and narratives using photographs and
found images.

If you or anyone you know would be interested in this affordable, fun
Thursday evening class, please pass along this information. The course
would be ideal for students working on a portfolio, or adults who have
had an idea for a painting percolating for years.

He conducted onstage interviews at Umbria's Trasimeno Music Festival with Vikram Seth and Ian McEwen and recently completed six podcast documentaries for artsalive.ca to mark the 40th anniversary of the National Arts Centre Orchestra.

SparkBox Studio - Square2 Magazine Launch Party

The Square2 team is thrilled to announce the release of their second issue. With
more local artists, as well as some great outside talent, issue two is packed with
great artists, writers, playwrights and musicians. We have gone up in pages and
are happy to say we will be one of the first Eastern Ontario magazines to create
an iPad version!

The fall issue of Square2 will be launched at Sly-Fi Chapel in Trenton in
conjunction with Emily Fennell's "Thank You" concert on September 25th. The
evening will be filled with good music and interesting reads. Everyone that
attends the event will be given a special edition copy of the magazine with a CD
from Emily Fennell. Be sure to contact info@square2magazine.com for ticket

Homelands with Dagmara Genda and Marigold Santos

Modern Fuel Artist Run Centre, 21 Queen St., Kingston ON

"Homelands" pairs the drawings of Dagmara Genda and Marigold Santos, highlighting the role of place and space in the construction of identity. Genda's practice stems from three interests that inter-relate and inform each other -- nationalism, space, and identity -- topics that directly relate to her childhood immigration from Communist Poland to Canada. Her drawings in this exhibition bring together Soviet and Western influences. Santos presents a series of drawings inspired by childhood memories of her family's immigration from the Philippines when she was six years old. Visitors to "Homelands" will be awarded multiple points of entry into a surreal exploration of a continuous search for the physical or fantastical notions of home. Genda and Santos will be presenting artist talks in the Education Tent of the Kingston Multicultural Festival in Kingston's Confederation Park at 2 and 3pm on Saturday the 25th of September, with a reception to follow at Modern Fuel at 7pm.

Dagmara Genda (Saskatoon, SK) is a Polish-Canadian artist and writer with a BFA Honours in painting at the University of Manitoba and an MFA at the University of Western Ontario. Genda has exhibited cross-country with the support of the Saskatchewan Arts Board, published with Locus Suspectus magazine and written for Forest City Gallery in London, Ontario and AKA Gallery in Saskatoon.

Marigold Santos (Montreal, QC) pursues an inter-disciplinary art practice involving drawn and printed works, sculpture, animation, and sound. She completed her BFA in Print at the University of Calgary in 2006, is a recipient of numerous awards, and has exhibited her work within Canada, United States, and Japan.

The Doxas Brothers Quartet, feat. John Abercrombie and John Menegon

Over the last few years, The Cove has grown into a formidable venue
for not only homegrown, but world class talent. The popular Blues on
the Rideau Series going into it's 6th season, the 4th Annual
MUSICwestport Festival and the 13th year of Thursday Jazz Night with
The Spencer Evans Trio featuring co-owners Jeff and Seamus Cowan have
contributed greatly to this venue's attraction. With the musical
knowledge and expertise of the Cowan brothers being members of the
Westport Arts Council and trained musicians themselves, this
destination can only grow.

The Cowans honed their musical training in Montreal where they lived
for about 10 years studying at McGill University in the Jazz Program.
They received training from some of the country's best players and
played along side some of the best up and comers as well. Two of
those were Jim and Chet Doxas from Montreal whose family along with
father George Doxas have been fixtures of the Montreal scene for a few
decades. On this date, Chet and Jim have brought together two
generations of musicians at the top of the jazz world with the common
thread being a devotion to great improvising. The group's repertoire
is comprised of original works from each band member and many of the
compositions are written specifically for this quartet. Together,
saxophonist Chet Doxas and drummer Jim Doxas have established
international reputations as two of the most promising improvisors of
their generation, both in their early 30's. Bassist John Menegon's
credits read like the evolution of modern jazz. Menegon has performed
and recorded alongside Pat Metheny, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, and
Lee Konitz, to name very few. John Abercrombie's contribution to the
guitar and jazz music is undeniable. With an active career spanning
over 50 years, Abercrombie is an artist who at once embraces the jazz
tradition and creates it. His relationship with the record label ECM
has seen Abercrombie produce some of the most important jazz albums in
the last 30 years.

This Saturday, the Playhouse premieres local playwright Doug Bowie's latest, Till It Hurts, at the Springer Theatre. Directed by Queen's alum Daryl Cloran (Stratford, Shaw, CanStage, Neptune, and many more), and starring Kingston's own Ian D. Clark (TIP - Trying, Assorted Candies) this truly will be a homegrown delight.

Poor Esme, played by Toronto stage actress Maria Ricossa, has recently landed a job as an assistant at the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Unwittingly, she finds herself doing telemarketing calls for the organization and one of her first 'solicitation' attempts is to a cantankerous local university professor, Dr. Seymour Mann. Seymour (Clark) is particularly harried on this day because he is in the midst of final preparations for the M. Charles Plumbell Once-In-A-Lifetime Lecture. A lecture that will forever define his place in the annals of academia. Mix in university student Amber Moon (soulpepper regular Sarah Wilson) and Stephen Lewis himself (played with sparkling wit by Shaw Festival veteran Jeff Meadows) and you have the perfect ingredients for a laugh-out-loud comedy.

Following its recent premiere at the National Arts Centre,

Night, by Queen's graduate Christopher Morris opens at the Thousand Islands Playhouse on September 18.

A powerful representation of the challenges facing those living in Canada's far North. Co-produced by Morris' Toronto-based theatre company, Human Cargo, and the National Arts Centre, it tells the story of how the lives of a Toronto anthropologist and 16-year old Inuk girl intersect powerfully during 24 hours of darkness in Pond Inlet, Nunavut. Daniella, played by seasoned Toronto actor, Linnea Swan, is a scientist from the big city; Piuyuq, played by 17-year old Inuk actor Abbie Ootova,is an Inuit girl with big dreams. As the two cross paths, their lives are changed forever.

Night was created over three Arctic winters in Iceland and Nunavut and is presented in both Inuktitut and English. The story was originally developed by five theatre artists (two Inuit, two Icelandic and one Southern Canadian) in what Morris calls "a truly collaborative process".

Kingston AIDS Walk and Lantern Festival

Please mark your calendars and remember to put on your walking shoes and come out to City Park on the 18th of September to support the local AIDS Walk. We hope to raise $10,000 this year to assist people in our community living with HIV/AIDS. To pre-register for this event, go to http://www.aidswalkforlife.ca/Kingston.htm . The AIDS Walk registration starts at 6:15pm with the Walk itself starting at 7pm.

At 8pm, following on the heels of the AIDS Walk, this year's Lantern Festival will be one of our most powerful and poignant light displays to date because of a grant from the City of Kingston Arts Fund (CKAF). Along with the involvement of three community groups creating light installations around the theme of 'spark', we have a number of professional artists creating works for the night of September 18^th, 2010 between 8 and 10pm.

In our efforts to involve communities affected by HIV, community installations in response to this year's theme will come from GLBT youth, marginalized women, and people with HIV/AIDS (PHAs). Five local artists will also be developing light installations and one performance in response to this theme. They are: Joseph Babcock, Julie Fiala and Kate Yüksel, Jocelyn Purdue, and Jane Thelwell . Once again, we will enjoy the magic of drummers, a labyrinth of light by Eleonore and Grace MacDonald, and a projection of images created by PHAs from a project conceived by Marney McDiarmid.

Calamity Janes at The Thousand Islands Playhouse

Kingston's newest all female band is putting on a show at The Thousand Islands Playhouse on Tuesday, September 14th 2010 alongside Island Voices. The show will feature original tunes by all four women: Jenica Rayne, Lynne Hanson, Danielle Lennon and Les Casson as well as few great covers and even some fiddle tunes. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children, $40 for a family. Tickets can be purchased at the Thousand Islands Playhouse Box Office.

Calamity Janes have been together for almost two years and have been making a name for themselves playing various shows including: the opening of The Beautiful Women Project in Gananoque, The Red Roof Women's Festival and The Homegrown Music Festival as well as putting on their own shows at bars and restaurants in Toronto, Kingston, Picton and the surrounding area.

The Janes came together in the winter of 2009 upon realizing that they were all fans of each other's work. So why not work together? The vast diversity in the musical backgrounds of these four women gives the Janes a different flavour and the ability to play proficiently in countless styles. Calamity Janes always please their audience and can move gracefully from a longing folk song to a soulful blues, through rock n' roll and right to a rockin' fiddle set.

However... the RCHA club will be open to Sweet Folk All-ers to use for a 'Do It Yourself' song-circle evening [basically, just show up & play when it's your turn - a song 'circle' can start with just 2 players...!]. I hope that you are all enjoying this last blast of summer! I have lined up some great concerts for this fall at the Rankin Gallery and hope that you'll be able to come and enjoy some world-class music at our intimate venue. For new subscribers to this list I've included a description of our events at the bottom.

First, we are very happy to announce that Canadian music legend Ken Whiteley, one of this country's best-known and respected roots musicians, is coming on Sat. Oct.2 at 8 pm.

Ken Whiteley has had a huge influence on the Canadian music scene. His musical journey has taken him from jug band, folk and swing to blues, gospel and rootsy rock. Among numerous accolades, he has won a Canadian Folk Music Award, Genie Award for Best Original Song in a Canadian film, and lifetime achievement awards from the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals and Mariposa Folk Festival. He has been nominated for 7 Juno awards and 13 Maple Blues Awards. Ken's live performances showcase his outstanding musicianship on guitars and mandolin, award winning original songs and his powerful vocals.

For the last 6 years or so I've put on intimate concerts at the gallery
space in my home near Inverary. I have been able to host some wonderful touring musicians such as Valdy from BC, The Wailin' Jennys from Winnipeg, Bill Bourne from Alberta, Coco Love Alcorn and Kate Reid from BC, Marc Atkinson Trio from BC, The Dust Poets from Manitoba, Eliza Gilkyson from Texas, Fruit from Australia, The Pacific Curls from New Zealand, Jez Lowe from the UK, Maeve Mackinnon from Scotland, The Carolina Chocolate Drops,
Chuck Brodsky and Jonathan Byrd from North Carolina, Alan Gerber from Quebec, Amelia Curran from NFLD, James Hill from NS, Rose Cousins from PEI as well as great Ontario musicians such as Rick Fines, Lynn Miles, The Marigolds, Dala, The Undesirables, Claire Jenkins and Treasa Levasseur.
People bring something to drink, maybe a snack, and a donation for the musicians. The audience loves the intimacy of the space and getting to talk to the artists. The musicians love it too as it allows them to connect in a way that is different than a large concert hall. It is open to anyone on my mailing list and works on a first come first served reservation-only basis. I have 50 spots and room for about 10 more standing and it usually fills up very quickly. Just click reply and I will save you a spot or two and get back to you with a confirmation.

Directions: From Hwy 401 take the Division Street exit north at Kingston. Go north on Division St. (Perth Road) 15 km to Inverary. At Inverary turn right at the stoplights (Latimer Rd.). After a few hundred metres bear left onto Round Lake Rd. We are at 3248 Round Lake Road, 4km from Inverary on the left.

Hang Ups Gallery (HANG UPS) is excited to be opening a new gallery space for monthly exhibits and we would like to invite you to submit for the first year of programming.

HANG UPS is interested in presenting new works of art by emerging & established artists across the region, with a focus on area artists & showcasing the accomplishments of local schools. HANG UPS Gallery will be exhibiting original, high quality fine art & sculptures that our customers can enjoy. We welcome works of any medium including paintings, drawings, print makers, sculpture, pottery & photography.

The exhibition area is 156 square feet with 40 feet of wall space. The area is able to accommodate roughly 12 - 14 pieces two dimensional &/or three dimensional works (average size: 16 by 20 inches (2D) & 10 inch diameter (3D)).

Artists may apply to exhibit solo, or partner with another artist(s) provided all artists are successful in their application to exhibit. The exhibition season runs from January to October inclusive.

Hang Ups will collect a 25 percent commission. No fee will be charged for exhibiting at HANG UPS, nor shall "Artist fees" be paid to exhibit. HANG UPS requests that a minimum of 75% of the works be for sale.

The submission deadline for the 2011 exhibition season is September 30^th, 2010. Notification of acceptance to exhibit will be received by October 31^st.

THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (ABRIDGED)

Kingston, August 23, 2010 – Kingston's newest theatre company, the King's Town Players, are proud to announce their upcoming inaugural production: The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield. All of Shakespeare's 37 plays, with the sonnets thrown in for good measure, are compressed into one hilarious show. In under two hours, every play by the Bard will be performed by just three actors: Kingston theatre veterans Clayton Garrett, Steven Spencer and Zorba Dravillas. Directed by another veteran of the Kingston stage, Krista Garrett, these three will pull on their tights and deliver all of the Shakespeare's work with humour, energy and help from the audience.

The members of the cast and crew of The Complete Works are incredibly excited to be opening the King's Town Players first season. As director Krista Garrett says, "The Complete Works has been my decade-long love affair and I'm thrilled to be lending my twisted take to this production."

It's been said of The Complete Works that "If you like Shakespeare, you'll love this show. If you hate Shakespeare, you'll love this show!"

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) runs from September 14 to 18 at 8:00 PM, with a special matinee on Saturday, September 18 at 2:00 PM,

at Convocation Hall in Theological Hall, Queen's University.

Tickets are $20 ($17 for students and seniors) and are available at the Grand Theatre Box Office

The Children's Choir of St. George's Cathedral begins a new term on Friday September 17th from 4:15pm to 5:15pm. The choir provides a fun, friendly, safe environment for boys and girls aged 7 to 13 to sing together. We rehearse on Fridays after school, and sing monthly on Sunday morning, as well as other special services. The fun and fellowship of singing together is augmented by the occasional party and other special events. Call for Art!

This fall, Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre is excited to be launching our newly designed
fundraising project – a deck of MF ARCards! This distinctly Kingstonian deck of cards
will represent the creative strength of our community by reproducing the work of local
artists and designers on the front of each card.

The cards will be sold as a collector and tourist item at various businesses throughout
the city with all proceeds supporting Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre. Projected to be
one of our most significant fundraising events this year the cards will, at the same
time, raise the profile of contemporary artists within Kingston and its environs.

Modern Fuel* is currently seeking images of new and/or past works to be included
on a card in the deck together with the name of the artist. The submissions for this
project will be considered on a first-come-first-served basis, however, publication of
all submissions cannot be guaranteed. If an artist would like to request publication
of their image on a particular card (for instance, the Queen of Hearts), these will
also be distributed on a first-come-first-awarded basis. Multiple submissions will
be permitted. If you would like to donate an image to the MF ARCards, you are
invited to use the submission form on our website at www.modernfuel.org/deck
, which includes information on the specs and file format standards for the cards.

Deadline for submissions is September 1st, 2010. We will hold a launch event for the
Card Deck in October 2010 where each artist in attendance can pick up their own free

I always thought of Kingston as the jewel that was unknown to the rest of Canada. It had that kind of character that builds over time…

I love Kingston…I resonate with it, I feel a rapport with it all…the old town…the building, the alleyways, the old churches…it's the textures of the red brick and the limestone. Kingston has always had a quality that really appealed to me…not in a pretty sense. Like landscape…its beauty comes from its ruggedness, its power to face time, its colours and of course the water and the light…

Dave Gordon • Syrian Statuary

The 10 paintings in this show were inspired by sculpture I saw in the Syria National Museum in Damascus. The Museum is rated in the top ten in the world and contains artifacts from 33 civilizations going back to 5000 BC – Roman, Byzantine and Arab Islamic collections exhibited side by side. I don't know the story behind the pieces that I photographed – why they were produced or if they were the work of one genius or a committee, but they are incredibly powerful and their expressive force jumps across time from the distant past to the viewer in the 21^st century. Until someone comes up with a working time machine museums are the closest we will get to time travel. Gary Snyder, in an essay titled "Entering the Fiftieth Millenium", and discussing much older cave paintings, says "No master realist painter of the last 500 years could better those painted critters of the past: they totally do what they do, without room for improvement."

A number of the sculptures in the museum are missing their heads. My titles reflect this: "Headless Bird God with Heads" and "Headless Calf". Two paintings reflect present day Syria – a landscape depicting the statue of Hafez al Assad on a desolate rocky hillside, and another titled "The Cult of Personality" which shows the head of the ancient god Baal with Bashar al Assad, the current leader.

Dave Gordon is an artist who lives and works in Kingston, Ontario. His work is in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Agnes Etherington Art Centre and Museum London, and private collections.

CCA urges the government to keep investing in arts and culture beyond Canada's Economic Action Plan

Just the Facts

On Friday August 13, the Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA) submitted its pre-budget brief for 2011 to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance. In it, the CCA frames the manner in which the federal government should invest in arts and culture, and emphasizes the need for the government to continue its commitment of stable funding for arts and culture as we come to the end of Canada's Economic Action Plan.

The CCA outlines priorities to stabilize and enrich the economic capacity of the creative sector. The complete submission defines six recommendations for investment:

1. Audience and market development at home and abroad: The CCA asks the government to dedicate $40 million of "new money" in order to expand its capacity to support market development nationally and internationally for Canadian artists, cultural institutions and industries.

2. Canada Council for the Arts: The CCA asks the government to increase the base budget of the Canada Council for the Arts by an additional $30 million per year beginning in 2011-12, with a view to reach $300 million by 2015.

3. Training and Internship/Mentorship Opportunities: The Department of Human Resources and Skills Development (HRSDC) should expand access to EI training support for the self-employed. Also, HRSDC should dedicate $1 million per year for five years to foster the professional development of cultural workers through internships and mentorships.

4. National Museum Policy: The CCA asks that in the context of a new National Museum Policy, the government dedicate an additional $50 million to promote Canada's national heritage, exhibit Canadian stories and preserve our culture.

5. Cultural Statistics: The CCA requests that the government give an additional $1 million to the Department of Canadian Heritage (PCH) to develop and maintain a satellite account for culture at Statistics Canada, as is done for tourism and the voluntary sector.

6. Investment Incentives: Finally, the CCA supports Imagine Canada's suggestion to establish a "stretch" tax credit that would increase the federal charitable tax credit by an additional 10% on all new giving up to $10,000, in order to increase the flow of charitable gifts from Canadians.

Tell me more

According to a report prepared by the Conference Board of Canada for the Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC), "the cultural sector of Canada's economy will be hit harder by the global recession than the overall Canadian economy." The real value-added output in the cultural sector "is expected to be 4.8% lower in 2009 than it would have been had there not been a recession". This reduction, which amounts to $2.2 billion, is more significant than the 4.0% reduction expected in the overall Canadian economy. On the other hand, revenues for Canada's culture sector are expected to be 4.3% —or about $3.1 billion—lower in 2009 than they would have been in the absence of a global recession.

Apart from government funding, cultural non-profit groups rely on philanthropy to survive. This is why it is worrying to note that, "endowment, donations and other revenues are expected to be most strongly affected (a 16% reduction), due to the weak economy and the decline in stock markets." The [CHRC] report indicates that this will likely have the largest effect on the performing arts and heritage sectors. Certain arts and culture fields depend heavily on business advertising, and endowments will suffer an even greater loss in revenues because of the impact of the global recession on these two revenue sources.

In its submission, the CCA applauds the decision of the government to allow cultural agencies under review to keep the 5% of their funds which they had identified as "lower priority". The CCA welcomes the view of the government that the CBC, the National Film Board, Telefilm and the Canada Council for the Arts are all meeting the objectives and priorities of this government. However, the CCA opposes the decision to replace the mandatory long-form census with a voluntary household survey, whose quality and usefulness has been criticized by all experts. The CCA deems it contrary to responsible management of Canadian taxpayers' money to waste an extra $30 million to gather data that cannot be relied upon to develop fact-based public policies.

In conclusion, the CCA states that while it understands the necessity to start eliminating the annual federal budget deficit, it would be very short-sighted to slash investments in the arts and culture sector, particularly given the fact that it still has to experience the main impacts of the recent economic crisis.

Arts and culture are important components of the creative economy - where Canada's future lies. In the digital age, it is of utmost importance for a nation to not only invest in digital infrastructure, but also in content development. Canadians have a duty to support the development of all forms of cultural content that reflects their identity as a nation, contributes to the country's reputation abroad and supports our commercial objectives on the international scene, while at the same time, making an important financial contribution to the domestic economy.

La CCA invite le gouvernement à continuer d'investir dans les arts et la culture au-delà du plan de relance économique

Les faits en résumé

Vendredi dernier, 13 août, la Conférence canadienne des arts (CCA) a soumis son mémoire pré-budgétaire 2011 au Comité permanent des finances de la Chambre des Communes. Dans ce document, la CCA définit la façon dont, à son avis, le gouvernement fédéral devrait investir dans le secteur arts et culture et souligne la nécessité de maintenir son engagement envers un financement stable, même une fois terminé le Plan de relance économique de 2009-2010.

La CCA précise les priorités nécessaires à une stabilisation et à l'enrichissement de la capacité économique du secteur créatif. Le mémoire articule six recommandations précises quant aux investissements à faire :

1. Développement des auditoires et des marchés au pays et à l'international: La CCA demande au gouvernement d'ajouter 40 millions de dollars afin de développer sa capacité à soutenir le développement des marchés à l'échelle nationale et internationale pour les artistes canadiens, les institutions et industries culturelles.

2. Le Conseil des arts du Canada La CCA demande au gouvernement d'augmenter le budget de base du Conseil des arts du Canada d'un montant supplémentaire de 30 millions de dollars par année commençant en 2011-12, en vue d'atteindre 300 millions de dollars d'ici 2015.

3. Formation et programmes de stages et de mentorat : Le ministère des Ressources humaines et du Développement des compétences (RHDCC) devrait donner aux travailleurs autonomes accès aux programmes de formation dans le cadre de l'assurance emploi. De plus, RHDCC devrait consacrer un million de dollars par année pendant cinq ans au développement des travailleurs culturels via des stages et du mentorat.

4. Politique muséale nationale : Dans le contexte d'une nouvelle politique muséale nationale, la CCA demande au gouvernement d'augmenter de 50 millions de dollars les budgets visant à la préservation, la présentation et la promotion du patrimoine canadien.

5. Statistiques Culturelles : La CCA demande au gouvernement d'attribuer au ministère du Patrimoine canadien (PCH) un million de dollars par année pour le développement et le maintien par Statistique Canada d'un compte satellite pour les statistiques culturelles semblable à ce qui existe pour le tourisme et le secteur bénévole.

6. Mesures d'incitation à la philanthropie La CCA appuie la suggestion d'Imagine Canada qui demande au gouvernement d'augmenter de 10% le crédit d'impôt fédéral pour les dons de bienfaisance s'élevant jusqu'à 10 mille dollars afin d'augmenter les dons faits par les Canadiens.

Selon un rapport préparé par le Conference Board du Canada pour le compte du Conseil des ressources humaines du secteur culturel (CRHSC), « le secteur culturel de l'économie canadienne sera davantage touché par la récession mondiale que l'économie canadienne dans son ensemble. » La production à valeur ajoutée réelle dans le secteur culturel canadien devrait être inférieure de 4,8 pour cent en 2009 à ce qu'elle aurait été en l'absence d'une récession. » Cette réduction, qui se monte à 2,2 milliards de dollars, est plus importante que la réduction de 4,0% prévue pour l'ensemble de l'économie canadienne. D'autre part, l'étude prévoit que les revenus du secteur culturel seront de 4,3% moindres (i.e. – 3,1 milliards de dollars) en 2009 qu'ils ne l'auraient été en l'absence d'une récession globale.

À part le financement gouvernemental, les groupes culturels à but non-lucratif s'appuient sur la philanthropie pour survivre. Dans ce contexte, il est alarmant de voir que « la récession mondiale devrait affecter les revenus tirés de toutes les sources, particulièrement des fonds de dotation. La faiblesse de l'économie et la chute abrupte des marchés boursiers devraient entraîner une réduction de près de 16 pour cent de cette source de revenus.» Le rapport du CRHSC indique que l'impact négatif sera particulièrement grand pour les arts de la scène et les organismes patrimoniaux. Certains groupes dans le secteur art et culture qui dépendent beaucoup de la commandite commerciale et des dons subiront donc des pertes encore plus élevées à cause de l'impact de la récession mondiale sur ces deux sources de revenus.

Dans son mémoire, la CCA applaudit la décision du gouvernement d'autoriser les organismes culturels soumis à l'exercice de revue stratégique à conserver les 5 % de leurs fonds identifiés comme « priorités moindres ». La CCA se réjouit du fait que le gouvernement considère que Radio-Canada, l'Office national du film, Téléfilm et le Conseil des Arts du Canada répondent aux objectifs et priorités du gouvernement actuel.

Par ailleurs, la CCA s'oppose à la décision du gouvernement de remplacer le recensement long format par un sondage volontaire des foyers, dont la qualité et l'utilité ont été dénoncées par tous les experts en ce domaine. Il nous apparaît contraire aux objectifs de gestion responsable de l'argent des contribuables canadiens de gaspiller trente millions de dollars de plus pour recueillir des données qui ne pourront pas servir au développement et l'évaluation de politiques publiques basées sur des faits.

En conclusion, la CCA affirme que tout en comprenant la nécessité de réduire le déficit budgétaire, ce serait adopter une politique à courte vue que de réduire les investissements dans les arts et la culture, étant donné tout particulièrement que ce secteur a encore à éprouver le plein impact de la récente crise économique.

Les arts et la culture demeurent un élément important de l'économie créative où le Canada de demain se trouve déjà. À l'ère du numérique, il est de la plus haute importance pour une nation d'investir non seulement dans les infrastructures numériques mais tout autant dans le développement de contenu.

Dan Curtis has a been a staple of the Kingston music scene for close to 20 years. He's played with Luther Wright & The Wrong, Butterfingers, Hemloxoup, BT Conspiracy, Snodbag Feedgrass, and many others. Dan was fortunate enough to see 4 Grateful Dead shows in the 90s, and is also welcomed a baby boy about a 2 weeks ago!

In honour of Jerry Garcia's 68th birthday on August 1st, and the 15th anniversary of his death on August 9th, we'll be having a Jerry Garcia tribute! As always, playing a Jerry/Dead song is NOT required, but appreciated!

Decomposing Pianos members Julia Krolik and Owen Fernley are presenting their second installation performance, "Languishing Bellows" at the Upper Canada Academy of Performing Arts on August 19th at 9pm. This is an hour long set that features accordions, old chord organs from the 50's and a reed organ made by the Blatchford Organ Co. The mandate of Decomposing Pianos is to combine new technology in music with innovations of the past through live improvisation. Last year, Decomposing Pianos removed the malfunctioning action from a 100 year old upright piano to reveal the iron harp within. The harp was painted black and white to correspond with the keys, and was played as its own instrument alongside a functional upright and a modern-day keyboard. The reed organ is the precursor to the upright piano and has since become the grey area between the majestic pipe organ and the family piano found decomposing in many of our living rooms. Prison Farm Documentary - Help Needed

Calling folks with video cameras. I am making a documentary film on the closure of Canada's Prison Farms and need videographers. You don't have to be a professional or even have much experience filming, maybe you have your own camera, maybe you don't but think the cause is good and can make yourself available to film (I can arrange to get a couple loaner cameras I think). Shoot dates: Likely Sunday (Aug. 8) and/or Monday (Aug. 9) when the dairy herd from Frontenac is planned to be moved to be auctioned in Kitchener-Waterloo on Aug. 10. The Save Our Prison Farms campaign plans to blockade the cattle trucks but given the size of the site (900 acres) and multiple entrances, it will be impossible for me to be in more than one place at a time to capture the event for my independent film project.

Depending on people's comfort levels, there will be opportunities to be in the thick of it or on the sidelines. The event overall is expected to remain peaceful.

The Institute
Spend a week tuning up your flute playing, making it free and effortless, using the whole body. Gain technical knowledge on body mapping, balance, breathing, embouchure, tone production, intonation, articulation, technical facility, fingerings, harmonics, and contemporary techniques. Get tips on setting up an effective practice routine. Deepen your understanding of "the language of music" through melodies, etudes, and common flute repertoire.
The teaching draws heavily on "The Physical Flute" approach of Robert Aitken, the teaching of Marcel Moyse, and notions about interpretation from both.
The class will address individual interests and concerns and will use video feedback and supportive peer critique, in addition to direct guidance from the clinician.
Daily format: warmup (stretching and breathing; exercises to develop fullness and directness of tone, low register, articulation); group improvisation (exploration of the capabilities of the flute); melodies (M. Moyse 24 Melodies, Tone Development Through Interpretation); studies, repertoire—participant choice, masterclass format; clinic ("Ask the Doctor"); flute choir.
About the clinician
Dr. William Egnatoff began playing flute in 1955 at age 7 1/2 in Melfort, Saskatchewan, and began teaching flute in 1960. His teachers included Dietrich Wiegel (a German-trained bandmaster), James Bolton (a photo-chemist), Ed Abramson (who studied one-year with Kincaid at Curtis); Nicholas Fiore (University of Toronto, Toronto Symphony), John Wummer (New York Philharmonic), and Britten Johnson (Peabody Institute, Baltimore Symphony) during four summers 1963-1966 with the National Youth Orchestra; Marcel Moyse (flute and woodwind masterclasses 1970-1979), and Robert Aitken (Music at Shawnigan, 1981, 1982). Egnatoff's teaching is based on that of his most influential teachers--Abramson, Moyse, and Aitken. It is also influenced by many years of choral singing and training and by recent study (one year) of voice with Marie Anderson and related study of Alexander technique and body-mapping literature. From 1974-80, he taught flute at the Department of Music, University of Saskatchewan. He played in the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra 1961-68 and 1974-80 (Principal) and the Saskatoon Woodwind Quintet. He directed the SSO Summer Orchestra Workshop 1975-78. While doing graduate study in physics at the University of Toronto 1968-71, he played baroque music with Te Deum Concerts in Dundas, Ontario, and played in the Hamilton Philharmonic (Second flute, 1969-70) during Boris Brott's inaugural year. He studied composition 1965-67 with Murray Adaskin and has written several instrumental and choral works. His degrees are in physics and he has interests in musical acoustics. In Kingston, he plays in three chamber music groups, The Kingston Classics Trio, Classic Delights Trio, and The Telemann Trio. He sings in the Cantabile Men's Chorus. He is Associate Professor, Computers in Education, Faculty of Education, Queen's University, a chair he has held since 1984. He is currently developing a Web site on his flute teaching and is preparing a biography of Robert Aitken.

Woodworking Museum Event Highlights Local Artisan

A selection of the region's artists will take over the MacLachlan Woodworking Museum for the first "From the Tree: Designs in Wood" show and sale on Sunday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the sale and to the museum is FREE for this special event.

Local woodworking artists Nelson Freedman, John Williams, Ken Waller, and Lance Besharah, members of the Kingston Woodturners, will be on site to demonstrate the transformation of wood into works of beautiful art. Other artists will be showing sculpture, scroll work and baskets. Original and unique gift items such as twig furniture, painting and hand-turned bowls will be for sale. Children and their grown-up friends can make handmade paper and other wood-related crafts.

Many of these artists donate their time and energy to support the educational activities at the MacLachlan Woodworking Museum. As woodturner Nelson Freedman expresses, "I love woodturning because it combines several of my interests, woodturning as an art form, the motor skills necessary for producing a finished product, and principles of good form and design. Mostly, I am excited when hidden beauty secrets are exposed as a log is converted into a beautiful art form or useful object."

Families can enjoy a day of activities while witnessing the traditional art of woodturning. From the Tree: Designs in Wood takes place Sunday, Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the MacLachlan Woodworking Museum, on the grounds of Grass Creek Park. Modern Fuel's 12th Annual Regional Juried Members' Exhibition will be presented at Modern Fuel from August 7th to September 4th. An opening reception with the artists and curator in attendance will be held on August 7, 2010 at 7pm.

Works by the nine artists in this year's exhibition, Suki Falkner, Dave Gordon, Rick Lapointe, Natasha Mazurka, Sean Morris, Maayke Schurer, Svetlana Swinimer, Chris Trimmer, and Kate Yüksel, reflect the excellence of the wide-ranging practices of artists in the region, including sculpture, painting, video, and sound art. This year's guest curator, Valérie Lamontagne, has selected works according to a summertime theme. Just as summer is a time for slowing down, hanging out, and daydreaming, the works in this exhibition invite viewers to stop, contemplate, and take time to reflect on the surrounding world.

Valérie Lamontagne (Montreal, QC) is a digital media artist, designer, theorist and curator researching techno-artistic frameworks that combine human and nonhuman agencies. She is the Founder and Director of 3lectromode, a design group invested in developing wearables combining state-of-the art technology with current fashion research. She is a Ph.D. researcher at Concordia University, where she teaches in the Department of Design & Computation Arts.
